“Pilottown” (2022)
“Since 1896, law has required commercial ships entering Delaware Bay — including all vessels bound for Philadelphia — to be operated by members of the Delaware Pilots Association. Shark-mouthed ‘pilot boats’ regularly ferry these pilots from Lewes past the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse at Cape Henlopen and out to waiting ships. The pilots are so engrained into Lewes culture that the area where the pilots once lived is still known as Pilottown.” — Erick Sahler
